What is Depression?

 

Depression is a serious and often disabling psychiatric disorder. Depressed individuals often feel hopeless, worthless, discouraged, and suicidal. Many people who feel this helpless will have suicide attempts to stop the mental anguish. It is vital to recognize depression and initiate treatment before severe deterioration occurs.

The symptoms of depression generally last 2 weeks or more and are:

  • Depressed mood
  • Decreased interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Poor/Disrupted sleep or excessive sleep
  • Agitation or Lethargy
  • Fatigue
  • Poor concentration
  • Feelings of excessive guilt or worthlessness
  • Suicidal Thoughts

Depressed individuals often isolate themselves. Their functioning declines socially, interpersonally, and work suffers. The sooner they can be evaluated by a psychiatrist, the quicker they will be at peace and their quality of life improves.
